Wrote my first pop song

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

I'm mostly known for my Film/TV scoring work, but I also love to write and produced songs when I get a chance. So it was amazing to have the opportunity to work with an incredibly talented co-writer, Elise Solberg, who also wrote lyrics and performed. She's amazing go check out her music, she performs with Chloe x Halle. Here's our song, My Superpower.

The song was written for the Society of Composers & Lyricists "Song-Demic" global challenge, which challenged us to write a song inspired by a TV show. Having just recently watched Mindy Kaling's Never Have I Ever on Netflix, which has a wonderfully upbeat 80s vibe to the soundtrack and I loved how young Asian American kids were being shown as incredibly fun, interesting, and complex characters and not just nerdy stereotypes. I mentioned this to Elise, and we both decided this would be a fun show to inspire our writing.

We wanted to have the song talk about the journey that the main character, Devi, goes through from despair to empowerment, and so My Superpower was born. Hope you enjoy it!

My Superpower Lyrics

Never hard for me to be number one.

Never hard for me to be number one.

Always marching to the beat of my drum.

So how could I just let myself become so undone?

Got caught up listening to what everyone wants.

Almost forgot the words to my own song.

Cause all I ever really wanted was to belong.

So who am I supposed to be,

when no one knows the real me?

I’m on the outside, just trying to find,

where I belong, in the rhythm of life.

But what makes you different, makes you shine.

So turn up the lights and I will find

My superpower. My superpower. My superpower. My superpower.

Trying on whatever just to fit in.

All my life I was never the cool kid.

So ashamed of all the scars within, that I hid.

Obsessed with how I look in everyone’s eyes.

Thought I’d be better off just living a lie but,

I didn’t know I’d end up feeling so paralyzed.

So who am I supposed to be,

when I’m the only one who sees.

I’m on the outside, just trying to find,

where I belong, in the rhythm of life.

But what makes you different, makes you shine.

So turn up the lights and I will find

My superpower. My superpower. My superpower. My superpower.

And it got the best of me.

It left me bruised, I felt like a fool, but now I see

that my only tragedy, was hiding who I’m meant to be.

I’m on the outside, just trying to find,

where I belong, in the rhythm of life.

But what makes you different, makes you shine.

So turn up the lights and I will find

My superpower. My superpower. My superpower. My superpower.

My superpower. My superpower. My superpower. My superpower.
